Touring
These are rivers, or routes, which are looked on as ideal for touring trips. They may involve some sections of loch or flat water as well as some whitewater. There shouldn't be any significant water above grade III, but what there is should be possible to portage. They will be suitable for descent in traditional open canoe or touring kayak, and might be a bit of a slog in a whitewater boat.
Moving Water
Rivers with no real whitewater, or perhaps just the odd riffle.
Simple Whitewater
Easy, gentle and straightforward white water, mostly up to grade II with perhaps a bit of grade III thrown in. More continuous than a touring river with few or no flat sections.
Moderate Whitewater
moderate white water, mostly grades II and III with perhaps bit of grade IV thrown in, though it should be possible to portage this. Perhaps more continuous than simple whitewater, with longer or more complicated rapids.
Serious Whitewater
Challenging or committing whitewater, plenty grade IV and above.
Loch & Lakes
Pretty much any body of inland water, including sea lochs and fiords.
Tidal Rivers & estuaries
Estuaries and river mouths subject to tides.
Canals & Waterways
Canals & waterways, Man made wonders of the industrial age.
Playspot
Whitewater park and play, usually a river feature where you can spend the day blaming you boat for your inability to throw the latest move.
Coast & Surf
Coastal locations; these may be useful access points for sea trips, surf locations, or a bit of both.
Unclassified
Something that doesn't fit into any other category - probably means we need a new category.
